A Bit of a Blog…. ❤️

Kara Dodson Kara Dodson

this is how we do it…..

Actually I don’t know if it’s interesting or not but I thought I’d explain the whole process of how you get to have sweeter dreams sleeping on your delicious very handmade pillowcases.

So…..

We get a whole heap of white ex-hotel just-been-laundered pillowcases and then we go through them one by one and

PAIR them. We find their soulmates. Because there are some pretty random sizes, the really odd super long ones we

CUT & SEW to make them a bit more normal. The ones that are toooo odd, We’re looking at making cushion covers and who knows what out of those.

Then we start

DYING.

We might do about 60 pairs at a time. That means we boil up the hot water and add all the bits and bobs and stir and stir and then rinse and rinse and when its all tickity boo and cooked and ready they get rinsed again and then

WASHED in the washing machine. When they’re done we obviously

HANG those out to dry.

When they’re dry they all get

IRONED. This takes ages and watching a bit of telly like a doco or something not quite so brainy is good for this.

Then we

PAIR them again. Find their mates.

Now they’re ready to print so we

STUFF each one with newspaper so when we print, the ink doesn’t go through to there other side because that would be ugly.

We sort our some banging colour combos and do the

FIRST PRINT.

We might do about 20-30 pairs at a time, each one a different colour combo. As we go each one gets

HUNG UP to dry. When they’re dry, usually on the next day we

PRINT THE SECOND COLOUR.

These also get

HUNG out to dry.

We do that with each colour and each print.

When they’re all super dry- we usually wait a few days, we get all the print runs together and take them to the commercial laundry and have them

HEATSET in the big gas dryers. As soon as they come out we

FOLD them so they don’t get mega wrinkly again. And then when we get home we

PAIR them again!!! We find their besties for the last time.

Then, since we are sooo flash now, we

PHOTOGRAPH  each one and then

LOAD the pix up onto our website with a description.

Then they sit in our washhouse (I wish we could say studio) until they find their owners.

Thats it.

Until the next sesh.

Kiaora Koutou!! He wiki nui!

Koinei te Wiki O Te Reo Maori no reira tena koutou, tena koutou, tena koutou katoa. He mihimihi nui kia koutou katoa mo tou aroha me tou tautoko o tenei wiki.

This is Maori language week. Hello to you all and thank you for all for your love and support this week.

What a week!!!! Today our website has been live for 7 whole days. We’ve been busy sending treasures here and there (especially thank you Mpwante- Alice Springs- whanau). All of your moenga (beds) and upoko (heads) and moemoea (dreams) are going to be sooo much rekareka (sweeter).

On the last print run we did a couple of months ago, we were sooo excited about all of the fruity fabo colour combos, especially on the Hibiscus’s. The turquoises and the purples and pinks and blues, sooo delish. Well, it worked out that everyone else was excited too and off they all flew onto beds around the world. So…. we’ve been busy making more. Today and yesterday we’ve been busy dying and today we have GREEN for the first time. Kinda odd, but we’re excited. Doesn’t take much.

Oh and we’ve got business cards- tooo flash!! Soooo grown up! But seriously were are just a little, homegrown cottage industry- very small fry. Very Lo-Fi. In the next few days we’ll do some more printing (on the kitchen table). Cant wait!!!

Ka kite ano, me kia pai tou ra, tou ao, me tou ngakau.

See you soon. May your day, your world and your heart be well.

Disclaimer- my Te Reo may not be perfect but I’m gana give it a try!!!

yipeee- we have a website

Ok so, I’ve just got to say we're pretty excited!!

The other day when we were travelling around the South Island trying to inject money into the sad tourist industry that’s been hit hard by Covid, I was talking to my lovely sister Tracey about how we’d been making the pillowcases and how we we're going to do the markets. She said ‘why don’t you make a website?’ I couldn’t think of a good reason why not to, so last week, when we got home, I gave it a shot. We got recommended Squarespace so I thought I’d try that first. It was EASY- seriously. Every single bit of it. And cheap too I think- This site cost us just under $200 a year plus the domain name. Anyone can do it. This is not a big mystery (anymore)

Anyway, heres it is. We hope you like it. We're going to try and keep up the blog and share more pix of us making them and let you know what markets we’re doing, when we’ve done a new print run and other things that might be nice.

Lots of love people and please please we’d love some feedback- if any of the links are dodgey- or if the pages take ages to load, or if you spot a spelling mistake or if you just want to say hi.

Kia Pai Tou Ra- have a lovely day!! xxx
